In 1965 , during the last year of the world’s fair in new york, a greek immigrant from near sparta in greece, Panagiotis Pete Manikis, at the age of 20, set flight to meet up with his brothers in new york city. Pete, as all his friends called him, was working in a cofee shop at the new york times building where he met his future wife Maria Hernandez. She had come from Puerto Rico at the age of 11 in 1959. In 1968 he traveled the world for 1 year as a merchant marine. After coming back a few years later, he helped build Six Flags Great America near chicago in 1974 and 1975. From his savings and a little help from his wife Maria , he opened his own coffee shop in 1976 near the corner of 116thSt. and 2nd. Ave. in new york’s famous east ” Spanish ” Harlem.
